A holiday tradition that many families have, including my own, is the giving of matching pajamas on Christmas Eve. There is something quite charming about seeing a family come together for photos with their flannel plaid nightwear. On occasion, the family dog gets in on the event with a matching piece of clothing. My 13-year-old daughter is still holding out hope that mom will agree to dress up our 90lb Doberman. Nope. Not a chance.
Each November, a good friend of mine gives me a large bag of flannel in various prints with very basic instructions to make lounge pants long enough for her boys. Her two eldest boys are super long and lean. Finding pants in the appropriate length poses a challenge for her. Face it, no one wants chapped ankles in the winter months! Seamstress friend to the rescue!
The first year I took on this project, I had to extend my basic pant leg pattern by about 5”. Thankfully, the boys seem to have stopped growing, or at least slowed down, so the pattern has remained pretty much unchanged over time. Well, aside from the request to make deeper pockets this year. Apparently, Tallest One’s hands are catching up to his legs!
All of the cutting work has been finished, pockets have been attached, and seaming work has been completed. I am now entering the stage of adding the elastic waist and finishing the hems. Six pair of extra long lounge pants should be packed up and ready to deliver by the end of next week.
In addition to these six pairs of lounge pants, I will also be making a few small pair for two of my friend’s youngest boys. Everyone will have a matching pair of lounge pants for Christmas photos, which will be happening sooner than later!
Are you preparing for the upcoming holiday season? Does your family have any traditions that you look forward to each year? Post your tradition in the comments for a chance to win a pair of custom length lounge pants for yourself or a loved one!
